CDS SSB Interview 2026
The CDS SSB Interview 2026 is the second and most important stage of the Combined Defence Services (CDS) selection process conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Candidates who qualify in the written examination are invited for the five-day Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview, where their intelligence, personality, leadership qualities, communication skills, decision-making ability, and officer-like qualities (OLQs) are assessed. This guide explains the complete SSB process, screening tests, psychological assessments, GTO tasks, interview rounds, conference, and preparation strategy.
| Particular | Details |
|---|---|
| Selection Stage | Stage II after Written Examination |
| Conducting Authority | Services Selection Board (SSB) |
| Duration | 5 Days |
| Assessment Areas | Intelligence, Personality, Leadership & Officer Like Qualities |
| Next Stage | Medical Examination & Final Merit List |
The Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview is a scientific and comprehensive personality assessment process designed to identify candidates who possess the qualities required to become officers in the Indian Armed Forces. Unlike a conventional interview, the SSB evaluates a candidate's behaviour, decision-making, teamwork, communication, emotional stability, and leadership potential through a series of psychological tests, group activities, and personal interviews.
Qualifying the written examination alone does not guarantee selection. The SSB Interview plays a decisive role in the recruitment process by assessing Officer Like Qualities (OLQs), leadership ability, adaptability, confidence, communication skills, and overall personality. Candidates recommended by the SSB proceed to the medical examination before the final merit list is prepared.
The Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview is conducted over five days. Each day is designed to evaluate different aspects of a candidate's personality, intelligence, leadership potential, communication skills, decision-making ability, and Officer Like Qualities (OLQs). Candidates are continuously assessed by the Interviewing Officer (IO), Group Testing Officer (GTO), and Psychologist.
| Day | Activities |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Screening Test (OIR Test & PPDT) |
| Day 2 | Psychology Tests |
| Day 3 | Group Testing Officer (GTO) Tasks – Part 1 |
| Day 4 | GTO Tasks – Part 2 & Personal Interview |
| Day 5 | Conference & Result Declaration |
The first day of the SSB Interview is known as the Screening Test. It is a qualifying stage where candidates are assessed through the Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test and the Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PPDT). Only candidates who clear Stage 1 proceed to the remaining four days of the SSB process.
The OIR Test evaluates a candidate's verbal and non-verbal reasoning ability. Questions are objective in nature and are designed to assess logical thinking, analytical skills, observation, and problem-solving ability under time constraints.
After the OIR Test, candidates appear for the Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT). A blurred picture is displayed for a few seconds, and candidates are required to observe it carefully, identify the characters, and write a short story based on the situation. After writing, candidates narrate their stories individually and participate in a group discussion.
| PPDT Stage | Candidate's Task |
|---|---|
| Picture Observation | Observe the displayed image carefully. |
| Story Writing | Write a logical and positive story. |
| Story Narration | Narrate the story confidently before the group. |
| Group Discussion | Discuss and arrive at a common group story. |
On the second day of the SSB Interview, candidates undergo a series of psychology tests conducted by a qualified psychologist. These tests are designed to evaluate personality traits, emotional stability, leadership potential, decision-making ability, social adaptability, and overall Officer Like Qualities (OLQs). Since there are no right or wrong answers, candidates are expected to respond naturally and honestly.
| Psychology Test | Purpose |
|---|---|
| TAT (Thematic Apperception Test) | Assesses imagination, personality and problem-solving approach. |
| WAT (Word Association Test) | Evaluates spontaneous thinking and attitude. |
| SRT (Situation Reaction Test) | Measures decision-making ability under different situations. |
| SD (Self Description Test) | Evaluates self-awareness and personality perception. |
The Group Testing Officer (GTO) evaluates candidates through various outdoor and indoor group activities. These tasks assess leadership, teamwork, communication, planning ability, initiative, courage, cooperation, and physical stamina. Candidates are expected to actively participate while demonstrating confidence and coordination with team members.
The Personal Interview is conducted by the Interviewing Officer (IO) and generally lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. Questions focus on the candidate's educational background, family, hobbies, achievements, career goals, current affairs, leadership experiences, and general awareness. The objective is to assess confidence, honesty, communication skills, and overall suitability for a career as a defence officer.
| Interview Area | Questions May Include |
|---|---|
| Personal Background | Family, education, hometown and hobbies. |
| Academic Profile | School, college, favourite subjects and achievements. |
| Current Affairs | National, international and defence-related events. |
| Leadership Experience | Teamwork, responsibilities and decision-making situations. |
Throughout the five-day SSB Interview, assessors continuously observe candidates for Officer Like Qualities (OLQs). These qualities reflect a candidate's potential to lead, inspire, and perform effectively in challenging military environments.
The Conference is the final stage of the SSB Interview process. Every candidate appears before a panel consisting of the President of the Board, Interviewing Officers, Psychologists, and Group Testing Officers. During this stage, the overall performance matches the standards expected from a future officer in the Indian Armed Forces. Candidates may be asked a few simple questions about their SSB experience, stay, or any recent developments. The Conference generally lasts for a few minutes, although borderline cases may receive additional evaluation.
Many capable candidates fail the SSB Interview not because of a lack of knowledge, but due to avoidable behavioural mistakes. The SSB focuses on natural personality rather than rehearsed responses. Remaining genuine, confident, and cooperative throughout the assessment is essential.
Preparation for the SSB Interview should focus on developing personality, leadership, communication skills, and confidence rather than memorizing answers. Consistent practice, self-awareness, and discipline significantly improve the chances of receiving an SSB recommendation.
| Preparation Area | Recommended Strategy |
|---|---|
| Communication Skills | Practice speaking clearly and confidently every day. |
| Current Affairs | Read newspapers and follow defence-related news regularly. |
| Reasoning Practice | Solve verbal and non-verbal reasoning questions. |
| Physical Fitness | Maintain stamina through regular exercise. |
| Personality Development | Develop leadership, teamwork, and positive thinking. |
The CDS SSB Interview is conducted over five days, covering screening, psychology tests, GTO tasks, personal interview, and the conference round.
The SSB Interview is challenging because it evaluates personality, leadership, and Officer Like Qualities rather than academic knowledge alone.
Yes. Regular practice of reasoning, communication skills, current affairs, physical fitness, and mock interviews can help candidates prepare effectively at home.
Candidates recommended by the SSB are called for a medical examination. Those who qualify medically are considered for the final merit list based on vacancies and overall performance.
Assessors evaluate Officer Like Qualities such as leadership, communication, responsibility, confidence, teamwork, initiative, emotional stability, and decision-making ability.
The CDS SSB Interview 2026 is much more than a traditional interview—it is a comprehensive personality assessment designed to identify future officers for the Indian Armed Forces. Success depends on confidence, honesty, leadership, teamwork, communication skills, and a positive attitude. Candidates who prepare consistently, remain authentic, and demonstrate strong Officer Like Qualities significantly improve their chances of receiving an SSB recommendation and progressing toward a rewarding career in the Army, Navy, or Air Force.
